'Classroom teaching helps many adults to improve their literacy and language skills, but to sustain and develop those skills, adults must go on learning outside of and beyond the classroom. Autonomous (i.e. self-directed) learning allows adults to do this, greatly extending the benefits of any tuition they receive.'

Finnish National Board of Education (2012), National core curriculum for literacy training for adult migrants, Finnish National Board of Education, Helsinki.

"The objective of literacy training for adult migrants is for students to learn basic oral and written Finnish or Swedish language skills. ...The National Core Curriculum for Literacy Training for Adult Migrants is based on a socio-constructivist conception of learning. According to this conception, learning is the result of a student’s active and goal-oriented action, where a new topic being learnt is linked to prior learning while studying is about doing things together."

Education for immigrants

The Grundtvig project 'Digital Literacy Instructor' (DigLin, 2013-15) developed a Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) approach to literacy learning in Dutch, English, German and Finnish for non-literate adult immigrants. The DigLin approach aimed to allow individualization of instruction and teacher-independent learning.

Sfi (Svenska för invandrare / Swedish for immigrants) is the national Swedish language learning programme for migrants. SFI bas combines Swedish for migrants with basic and life skills.

Free online resource

Sfx, Swedish for vocationally trained people, is Swedish teaching with a focus on the professional language. The purpose is to shorten the time for work or entrepreneurship. At present, there are free courses for ten different professional areas. The courses are paid for by the learner's local authority.
