In 1975 T.C. Jupp and S. Hodlin published Industrial English and a national scheme for Industrial Language Training (ILT) was established in the UK. Over the next ten years several approaches developed to support language learning in the workplace.
In this paper, Hilary Arnold, who worked with an ILT unit, describes the concept of Industrial Language Training, outlines the employment situation of Asian workers (then the main learner group) in the UK during that period, and examines three approaches to supporting language learning at work: language training for speakers of English as a second language, cross-cultural communication courses for native and non-native speakers of English, and, finally, projects in team building.
