Apprenticeship literacy in New Zealand (2011)

 

Sligo F. (2011), “Although they are looking at the words, they are not actually reading”: Apprentices’ liminal literacy and literacy tutors’ dilemmas, ANZCA Conference Proceedings 2011, Hamilton, New Zealand.

Study based on qualitative analysis of ten in-depth interviews with literacy tutors providing remedial literacy support to apprentices in New Zealand. Three major issues affected what tutors could achieve. First, tutors experienced substantial role ambiguity; second, apprentices were working in oral and experiential modes more than in print-literate modes; third, tutors found they had to employ an instrumental approach to their teaching in response to the situation they encountered.
