From May 2013 to the end of 2014, the universities of Bielefeld, Leipzig and Erlangen-Nuremberg worked on a joint project to develop a modular continuing education programme for teachers working in the vocational sector. The aim was to use language sensitisation to strengthen the mediation role of specialist teachers and teacher educators, faced with the additional demands of multilingual groups. The pogramme was based on a needs assessment and piloted nationwide.

Die Universitäten Bielefeld, Leipzig und Erlangen-Nürnberg haben von Mai 2013 bis Ende 2014 in einem Verbundprojekt ein modulares Weiterbildungsangebot für Lehrkräfte, die in der beruflichen Qualifizierung tätig sind, erarbeitet. Durch Sprachsensibilisierung sollten Fachlehrende und Ausbildende in ihrer Vermittlungsaufgabe gestärkt und im Hinblick auf die zusätzlichen Anforderungen in multilingualen Lerngruppen unterstützt werden. Die Weiterbildungsreihe wurde auf der Grundlage einer Bedarfserhebung entwickelt und bundesweit erprobt.

The Speak Up! Project (website dated 2011) aimed to improve workers’ mobility processes across Europe by facilitating the learning of the language of the destination country. The main results of the project are a methodical system of reference for language learning materials and an interactive online language learning platform for young, mobile European workers. This aims to complement professional training and daily work by helping learners acquire suitable vocabulary and common expressions for ten different occupations within four professional sectors. The project used the approach of two previous Leonardo da Vinci Projects: ‘Les mots pour construire’ and ‘Constructor 2000’.
